Almost 20 per cent of the world's population go without adequate and safe drinking water, and the problem is worsening as many rivers, lakes, and streams become more and more polluted. Fortunately, something is being done, at least in some parts of the world. Hundreds of thousands have been saved in Africa, not by reclaiming contaminated surface water, but rather by drilling water wells. Each provides a lifetime of fresh water for over 1000 people, and because the drilling equipment is already available, the total cost is only $3600 per well.
